A little History
At the beginning we started with a prefab-pound with 600 liter water and some goldfish. Taken the point that water alone can be very relaxing, we tought that that pound was more then enough for starters.
While visiting other people we discovered that there were more fish then only Goldfish. So we decided to look around for some other fish and plants. That was again a thing wich brought us the side of the pound with good weather.
A year later we were visiting a store again and I saw a beautiful Silver-fish. I instantly liked it, but Tilly said that this fish was way too big for our small pound. Pigheaded as I am, I wanted to know more about the fish and the salesman could only tell me that it was a Silver-Carp-ish kind of fish. Because of the fact that the fish wasn't too expensive, we went home, including the new fish, wich later-on got the name Moby Dick.
Offcourse it appeared that Tilly was right and the fish was indeed way too big for our little pound. He couldn't turn around and swim the way he should be able to do. Even the other fish lost a lot of space.
Because of this problem we got ourselves a little dilemma.. What should we do now. We could either return the fish or enlarge our pound. Offcourse we choose the option of enlarging everything.
We removed the prefab-pound and started digging a larger pound which contained 2500 liters of water
A friend of ours allready told us he knew someone who sold Koi, and wasn't too expensive. So we went there and after some explanations we found out that he sold Euro-koi. So we went home again with two new Koi. Once we were at home, we placed them in the pound and we thought that we could finally enjoy our pound, fish and garden... Thought...
Within three weeks, three-quarter of our fish died. Including the two new ones. So we went to the store were we also bought Moby Dick. They told us that it maybe would be a good idea to check our water.. Check our water? Was that necessary then? That was when we first found out about Ph, Gh, Kh and all those things. With the help of the shop-owner everything went okay and the fish got better.
Unfortunately we didn't got much time to enjoy our fish, because only 4 weeks later I got struck by a Heart-attack and had to go in the hospital for recovering. Even tough most people see a stay in a hospital as a terrible thing, I actually didn't find it too bad, because y two adult children bought me a couple of books over Koi. So my time flew by, because I read those books over and over again.
Once I was home again, Tilly came up with the idea of building a real pound! So we started drawing and with some help from other Koi-owners we started digging a hole in our backyard. At the end we have now got a pound which is respectively 2,7 meters and 3,9 meters wide and 5,7 meters long.
The pound is now 1,75 meters deep and in total, including the filter-system there is 29625 liters of water in the pound.
If you would like to see our pound in real, don’t be afraid to mail us. Perhaps we can make an appointment for visiting. Coffee and tea are always ready!
Greetings,
Harry and Tilly
